Brands and Bloggers|Blogging

Reaching out to brands can be intimidating. You may be dying to work with this new super-cool streetwear label but don't want to sound pushy, or overenthusiastic? Sound familiar?

It can be so scary approaching brands and hard to navigate your way to building a strong relationship with these companies.

1. Putting Yourself Out There

Brands are never going to ask to collaborate if they don't know you and your blog exist! Many people (myself formally included) just wait for brands to come to them, but with the growing number of blogs with so much to offer - this happens rarely. In the wild blogosphere it's hard to find your blog amongst others that have taken to the internet. When a brand does reach out, it's always a wonderful surprise - but don't count on it.

A simple, fool-proof way to get noticed is to join social media. Obvious, yet vital. If you feel like a certain brand represent your blog perfectly, then don't be afraid to drop them a quick tweet to find out if they're accepting blogger collaborations. Or, perhaps, DM them on Instagram to see if they're interested.

2. Accessibility

If a brand happens to stumble across your blog in search of collaborations then they'll want to get in contact pronto. Adding a 'Contact/PR' page to your repertoire can be your make or break - the fine line between a brand collaboration or a...not brand collaboration, if ya know what I mean.

Let's be honest, people can be lazy, and even high-profile brands don't want to spend hours traipsing around your blog only to find your email no where to be seen!

3. Do Your Homework

How do you expect to work with a brand when you know nothing about them? Better do your research. Also, this will make your email sound as genuine as you (hopefully) are, meaning there's more chance of securing that collaboration.

2. Writing Your Pitch

Like Dragons' Den, a structured pitch that showcases you and your blog is the key to securing a collaboration. I don't know how much I can emphasise this; it's VITAL.

This is in no way a cheat sheet to grabbing a collaboration, and there are certainly no rules to writing your pitch! It's best to experimenting with your options and finding what works for you, personally. However, this is my preferred layout that I always find myself coming back to.

Begin the letter with a polite greeting,

Introduce yourself, and explain why you want to work with the brand, why your blog is the perfect fit for the brand and what you can bring to the table. Also, in what way would you collaborate (ie. gifting basis, sponsored post) and how you would incorporate the brand into the post.

This is where it gets technical. Well, not really. Brands are always looking for the "important" bits, so remember to include a brief bit about your monthly/daily views, DA, unique visitors and social media counts.

To build on why you should work together, try linking a post or two related to the brand category. For example, if it's a hair care company, mention the best of your hair-related.

Seal the email with a quick thanks and you're ready to hit send!

3. Dealing With Dissapointment

During my whole "blogging career", if you like, I have collaborated with 3 brands in total (although have some exciting future collaborations - watch this space!). One of these, Eventbrite, sent me a piece of that hard-to-come-by shiny blogger mail requesting to work with me, but for the most part, I had to go find them!

Over the past 8 months (whoaaaa, where did the time go?!) I've sent over 30 emails to different brands. No. Joke. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with a rough ratio of 1 : 10 brands that I contacted, but don't be surprised if less than this even respond to your emails.

It isn't your fault. Most of the time it's down to your stats - painful, but it's true. Or perhaps they felt that your blog wasn't a good fit for their ethics, but for whatever reason, it's not an excuse to feel down. At the end of the day, they are the ones missing out!
